Test Schedule

The TOEFL iBT is scheduled to begin in phases, with the first phase to begin in the United States on September 24, 2005, and in the following countries as outlined below.

  • Canada, Germany, Italy, and France on October 22, 2005

  • Peurto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Nov. 4, 2005

  • American Samoa on Nov. 5, 2005

  • Guam on Mar. 18, 2006.

Other countries will not offer the test until 2006, with specific dates to be announced by Educational Testing Services (ETS).

New Score Scale

The TOEFL iBT has a different score scale, due to changes in the overall structure of the test like the addition of a new Speaking section and independent and integrated tasks. The new score scale is shown here:

Comparison Scores

ETS has created comparison tables to assist institutions in establishing required TOEFL iBT scores for admission purposes. While the total score comparisons are not exact due to differences in the versions of the TOEFL test, the comparisons will be used by the Office of Admissions and the Graduate School for admission purposes.

The current minimum TOEFL score required by the University of Oregon is 173 (computer-based test) and 500 ( paper-based test). Using the comparison scores provided by ETS, the new minimum score for the internet-based TOEFL will be 61.

Graduate departments at the UO have minimum TOEFL scores requirements between 500 and 600 (paper-based test). The following score comparisons from the ETS TOEFL website will provide the data you need to determine the minimum TOEFL iBT score for graduate admission to your department:
