Application/Admissions Process

The admissions deadline is January 15th. Applications may be considered at other times during the year only if they have previously completed introductory course work in preservation. Please inquire if there are special circumstances which will affect your term of entrance.

Your file will be reviewed by the Historic Preservation Committee when all required materials have been received. All applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision by mail no later than March 1.

The GRADUATE SCHOOL ADMISSION APPLICATION (Three options; please choose only one option)

Apply online. The online application to the Graduate School requires the applicant to pay the $50 application fee by credit card. [Note: The secure on-line application requires the use of Netscape Navigator versions 4.06 and greater or Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and greater that support JavaScript, Cookies, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). For Macintosh users, Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.51 or greater is required.]
OR Download the application in PDF format. Send it, with the $50 Graduate application fee, to the Historic Preservation Program's Graduate Admissions office. International students can also download the financial statement and other information here.
OR complete the paper application included in the mailed packet. Send it, with the $50 fee, to the Historic Preservation Program. The APPLICATION FEE of $50.00 is required only if you did not pay online (staff will forward this to the Office of Admissions)

Copies of all college and university TRANSCRIPTS (two official copies from each institution that has granted you a degree and one unofficial copy from all other schools attended).

A BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY (Resume) arranged chronologically by year which lists your undergraduate/graduate educational history, employment history, experiences and skills in preservation, volunteer work, major travel experiences, creative achievements, and any other experiences which you believe may be of interest to the admissions committee. Please, do not leave major gaps in the chronology without explanation.

An EDUCATIONAL/PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY which lists the course names and number of terms which you have completed of college-level courses in architectural history, architecture, historic preservation, history, archaeology, anthropology, geography, and any other courses of particular relevance to historic preservation. Note other relevant experience in these subjects, apart from formal classes. Also list and describe any publications or major research papers which you have written in these subject areas.

A STATEMENT OF INTENT which describes the reasons for your application, and any particular emphasis which you wish to pursue. Discuss your familiarity with the field of preservation and your understanding of the University of Oregon's Historic Preservation Program. In addition, please discuss your academic and career goals relative to historic preservation.

SELECTED EXAMPLES OF WRITTEN MATERIAL AND/OR GRAPHIC WORK in an 8 1/2 x 11 format. If you have not had experience related to preservation, submit selections which illustrate your research and writing skills and/or creative work.

GRADUATE RECORD EXAM (GRE) scores [Optional]. The GRE general test is now administered by computer at testing centers throughout the United States as well as internationally. Appointments to take the test are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Early registration is recommended to get your preferred test date. Please keep in mind that your scores have to reach us by January 15th. This means that if you wish to have the Admissions Committee consider your performance on the GRE exam, you will probably have to take the test before December 15th. For more information on the GRE contact Educational Testing Services at 609-771-7670 (M-F 8:00 am - 8:45 pm EST) or on the web at http://www.gre.org/ Note: There is no departmental code for Historic Preservation. Please use the Architecture code as this will assure that we will be able to locate your score sheet when it arrives at the University of Oregon. We also request that you include a photocopy of your scores with your application packet.

THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION. At least two must be from academic references unless you have been away from a college or university for several years. All three letters should comment upon your potential for independent scholarly research. Letters should be sent directly to the Historic Preservation Program on the Report on Graduate Applicant forms; your references may choose to attach additional letters to the form. You should verify that they have been sent.

For foreign students for whom English is not a native language, the results of the TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL) must be submitted. A score of 600 is the minimum paper score required for the Historic Preservation Program; for the computerized version of the TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. ADMISSION CHECKLIST

What are we looking for? There is no simple answer to this question. Each application is examined for individual merit. In order to gauge academic potential we look at GRE scores (if submitted), undergraduate grades, and letters of recommendation. We also look closely at the quality of the portfolio. Of particular importance, however, is the applicant's statement of intent. Potential students need to demonstrate their experience or interest in Historic Preservation, as well as present a clear understanding of what our program has to offer and how our program meets their goals. That being said, please remember that decisions are based on a number of factors and we are looking for well-balanced candidates. Good luck!

Admission

The two-year course of study is designed to meet the interests of students whose backgrounds are primarily in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, history, anthropology, and architectural history, but all undergraduate majors are eligible. Students from western states who wish to participate in the program through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) should inquire at the Graduate School.

Admission Fee

If admitted to the Program, an admissions fee of $100.00 will be required of all incoming students.ﾠ This fee is used in support of student orientation materials and the reception.
